Dr. Maria Montessori was Italy's first female medical doctor. After taking charge of nursery schools in Rome in 1907, she
developed a method of education based on the child's own innate desire for learning.
She tested her theories over several decades with an extensive set of materials which she designed to improve motor coordination,
and to teach the basic concepts of both linguistics and math to very young children.
Her research led her to conclude that the first 6 years of life are the most formative and the most important both physically and
mentally.
This approach to education continues to be respected and practiced worldwide. Because of the nurturing environment, Montessori
children have a well-developed understanding of self and respect for others.
